The MA in American Studies at Goethe University is designed for committed, well-rounded students with high academic standards, who wish to work in an international and positive learning environment.

In the established tradition of German higher education, our program focuses on developing our students’ intellectual autonomy by foregrounding independent and self-directed research. In this way, we foster critical writing, research, and problem-solving skills that prepare students for demanding PhD programs and/or the pursuit of professional occupations in areas such as publishing, media, politics, and public relations.

Our program values interdisciplinary scholarship. Frankfurt is among the largest American Studies departments in Germany, offering close and goal-oriented cooperation with professors and lecturers. The quality of education is furthered by small classes that facilitate a productive learning environment. In addition to our introductory courses on American Studies methodology and history, our methodically diverse faculty offer cutting edge seminars drawn from various fields of research such as literary and cultural studies, media studies, history, aesthetics, political theory, gender studies, critical race studies, cultural sociology, and posthumanism. Through independent study and student projects, students and professors work closely together to achieve learning goals set individually.
